Post video in Wikipedia

A few week ago, I read a article discuss about adding video into Wikipedia which I reckon is a very smart choice for Wiki's future. Luckily, I find a website tell people how to post a video to Wikipedia.

Here is the link. http://www.videoonwikipedia.com/howto.html.

Imagine, in the future, when you want to learn something like a historical event, you can find the very detail about the description about the event, timelines, character intro and some fabulous documentary. These documentaries could presented historical events vividly. Usually, the description of historical events are tedious, the targeted audience are limited. However, documentary film significantly reduce the requirement of audience. After watching such videos, learners could review the original contents specifically or use wiki to explain the some scenarios in the film.

I reckon that Wikipedia could influence on Web 2.0 learning environment if increasing numbers of videos are inserted in wiki in the future.  As a tertiary information source, wiki already has large amount of text information, adding videos could bring wiki huge competitive advantages.

The only problem is the feasibility. Many video websites like YouTube have already dominate our markets. Does it necessary to work with such websites? If does, wiki is just like a video curation tool with plentiful videos descriptions. If not, wiki don't have such budgets to shoot all the videos. Thus, how to use the materials which has already shared on the websites is the main issue they might need to be considered in the futures.

  1. Interesting idea to post videos on Wikipedia. The thing about videos is that it takes a lot of time to create one and people generally feel that a video is proprietary content. Since wikipedia is editable by anyone, what does that mean for videos? Can someone take someone else's video and change it? that spreads into intellectual property concerns...
